How does Restylane work?

Restylane Injections Palm Beach

Restylane adds volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds).

Restylane works immediately by adding volume to smooth away wrinkles. A clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, Restylane is specifically formulated to act like your body's own hyaluronic acid. So, you can use Restylane to visibly reduce moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds for a younger-looking you.

How does Perlane work?

Perlane Injections Palm Beach

Just like Restylane, Perlane adds volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds).

Like Restylane, Perlane is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid that is specifically formulated to add fullness like your body's own hyaluronic acid.

What makes Perlane different is the average size of the particles and the depth of injection. On average, the gel particles in Perlane are larger than those in Restylane, which makes Perlane a good choice for wrinkles that benefit from a deeper injection into the skin.

In three clinical studies of 150 patients each, on average 70% of patients maintained improvement for six months after just one Perlane treatment.

During your consultation, your healthcare professional will decide which product is right for you.

What is SCULPTRA?

Sculptra Injections Palm Beach

Sculptra, the U.S. trade name for New-Fill was approved by the FDA in August 2004. New-Fill is the previous trade name for the substance polylactic acid. It has been used for cosmetic purposes, such as filling out the cheeks, the hollows under the eyes, the marionette line areas around the mouth, the neck and other areas that have lost fat with aging or trauma, in Europe and Mexico since 1998. More than 200,000 thousand patients have been treated. Polylactic acid is a simple synthesized sugar that once injected into an area, stimulates the production of collagen. Polylactic acid is non-antigenic in human use and has been used in joint replacements, reabsorbable sutures and other human applications for more than 60 years.

Sculptra is a filler that restores volume that other fillers cannot and it is the newest addition to the multiple filler options for restoration and rejuvenation of the face and neck. Sculptra is compatible with most other fillers like Restylane and Perlane.

What is Polylactic Acid/Sculptra?

Polylactic acid is a synthesized simple sugar that is used in cosmetic applications as a soft tissue filler. Sculptra is different from other tissue fillers. It lasts up to 24-36 months in European studies. Once adequate correction is achieved, it needs to be touched up only once every twelve to twenty-four months. Unlike other fillers, Sculptra is used as a volume filler, more like fat grafting but without the downtime, the trauma, or the concerns over “viability.” As one ages, one’s face loses four to five grams of volume a year, the loss showing primarily in cheeks, under the eyes, in the chin and sagging neck. The loss of volume with aging has often been treated with surgical “pulling-back,” but Sculptra restores volume loss with a simple in office 30 minute procedure. Most cosmetic restorations require two to three treatments. Severe lipoartophy (fat loss) from HIV infection requires four to six treatments. The Before and After photos demonstrate the impressive results that can be achieved with Sculptra and its skilled use in any patient that has lost volume due to aging.

How does Sculptra work?

Right after a procedure, the correction appears fully treated, but most of the apparent correction is fluid used to deliver the polylactic acid particles into the subcutaneous layer. The fluid disappears within a few days of the procedure and the correction appears lost. But polylactic acid stimulates collagen formation in the skin and slowly over the two to three months following injection, the volume slowly increases from the newly-formed collagen. The restoration of volume loss is slow, but builds noticeably with each treatment. When fully corrected, the volume restored usually lasts two to three years. Cosmetic touch-ups are usually needed every two years. Patients with severe lipoatrophy may need touch-ups yearly.

How is the procedure done?

Sculptra is injected into the subcutaneous areas that need volume replacement with a 25-26 gauge needle in an overlapping fanning pattern or a droplet pattern with a number of individual injections, depending on the site of injection. An anesthetic is mixed with the Sculptra just before the injections are started and eliminates the need for nerve blocks. Each “procedure” takes fifteen to thirty minutes and procedures are usually done four weeks apart for the first two cosmetic procedures and no sooner than eight weeks for the third, in order to assess the degree of correction and determine whether any additional treatment is necessary. The exact number of sessions to achieve maximal correction of the areas being treated depends on the depth of the original deficit and the “volume” loss prior to treatment. Sculptra can be used to augment as well as fill. It can build out one's chin or fill in large areas of depressed acne scars. Sculptra can restore the volume time steals.

What are the cosmetic uses of Sculptra?

Sculptra may be used to restore volume to the sunken parts of the face: filling in the hollow under the eyes, heightening cheekbones, reshaping and re-supporting the mouth, chin, neck and the decollette. Its use is similar to fat transfer injections to the face, without the 2-3 weeks of swelling, the bruising or the pain. Please look at the Before and After photos for great examples of cosmetic correction using Sculptra.

Is Sculptra/Polylactic acid safe?

Polylactic acid is extremely safe. It is a simple sugar with a long history of use in cosmetic procedures. With time, it is biodegraded to lactic acid, a normal by-product of the body’s metabolism. In sixty years of use, there have been no reported allergic reactions. When placed too superficially, transient nodules may occur, sometimes even several months after treatment. They are usually not visible, but can be felt when they occur. This is very rare reaction, but again it is technique dependent. They go away with time.

What happens after the procedure?

There is some swelling and occasionally bruising afterwards from the volume injected so ice packs may be applied. Usually the patient can return to work immediately. The treated areas may be a little sore for a few days and the treated areas need to be massaged for five minutes at night for the week after treatment.

What to Expect with Artefill Treatment

  • Step 1 - Come in for a collagen skin test and then make an appointment to return in 4 weeks for treatment.
  • Step 2 - If no reaction to the skin test was observed during the four weeks, you may be treated with Artefill that day. Most people require more than one treatment to reach the level of correction that they want.
  • Step 3 - Return for a follow-up appointment in 4-6 weeks. At this time you and your doctor can decide if you would like to further enhance your results.

Artefill contains lidocaine to lessen the discomfort from the procedure. With proper placement, Artefill cannot be felt after treatment. You will see immediate results in wrinkle correction and can return to your normal daily activities after the procedure.

As with any injectable wrinkle filler, you can expect mild swelling and redness at the treatment site. These side effects common among dermal fillers are usually temporary. Occasionally, there is mild bruising that typically disappears in three to seven days. Less common side effects include rash and itching more than 48 hours after treatment, persistent swelling or redness, and increased sensitivity at some or all injection sites. Two other rare potential side effects of all dermal fillers may be lumps and granulomas, both of which can be treated by your physician.

Call your doctor immediately if you notice any unusual skin reactions around the treatment area.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Artefill?

Artefill is the long lasting solution for wrinkle correction. Artefill consists of a combination of microsphere enhanced collagen and lidocaine for comfort.

How does Artefill work to correct wrinkles?

First, the collagen in Artefill visibly reduces the wrinkles right away, then the microspheres provide a support matrix for natural, enduring wrinkle correction.

How does Artefill differ from temporary dermal fillers?

Temporary injectable wrinkle fillers are made of different kinds of natural or synthetic materials that are broken down and eventually absorbed by your body. As a result, wrinkle correction is only temporary and you may need repeat injections several months after the initial treatment to maintain your wrinkle correction.

Artefill corrects wrinkles differently. The unique microspheres are not absorbed by your body and provide the support your skin needs for natural, long lasting results.

Is Artefill safe?

Yes. Artefill has proven to be a safe and effective dermal filler for the correction of nasolabial folds and was approved by the U.S. FDA in October 2006. In clinical testing, Artefill was as safe as the control temporary filler. Since the launch of Artefill in 2007, tens of thousands of patients have been safely treated with Artefill

What is in Artefill?

Artefill is made up of microsphere enhanced collagen with lidocaine for your comfort.

What are microspheres?

The tiny microspheres in Artefill are made of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), one of the most widely used materials in medicine since 1949. The microspheres in Artefill remain intact at the injection site and provide structural support to keep your wrinkles from returning.

How long does an Artefill treatment take?

A typical Artefill treatment only takes about 15-30 minutes. It's easy to fit it into your lunch hour and you can return to your normal activities immediately.

Can anyone have Artefill treatments?

No. Some people are not good candidates for Artefill. Artefill is contraindicated in those who:

  • have a positive reaction to the Artefill skin test
  • have a history of severe allergies and hypersensitivity (anaphylaxis)
  • are allergic to the numbing agent (lidocaine) in Artefill
  • have a history of allergies to any bovine collagen products
  • are prone to thick scar formation (hypertrophic scars) formation and/or excessive scar formations (keloid scars)
  • are undergoing or planning to undergo desensitization injections to meat products

Are there any other treatment concerns with Artefill?

Yes. If you have any skin outbreaks (e.g., cysts, pimples, rashes, hives, infection) near the injection site, you should postpone treatment until they clear. If you are taking aspirin (NSAIDs) or anti-inflammatory drugs or have any medical condition that affects your blood, you may experience increased bruising or bleeding at the injection sites.

In addition, you should inform your doctor if:

  • you have had any treatments for smile lines in the last 6 months
  • you are receiving UV light therapy
  • you are currently on immunosuppressive therapy (medication commonly prescribed for those who have undergone an organ transplant, or are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, or other conditions)

It's important that you share your medical information with your doctor. Together, you can make an informed decision as to whether Artefill is right for you.

Are there any further precautions with Artefill?

Yes, you should know:

  • Artefill contains microspheres that help provide the support for wrinkle correction. The microspheres are not absorbed and can only be removed surgically.
  • The safety of Artefill in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and individuals under 18, has not been established.
  • There is always a risk of infection with any injection. Discuss the symptoms of infection with your doctor so you will be able to recognize them.

Are there any possible side effects with Artefill?

As with any injectable wrinkle filler, you can expect mild swelling and redness at the treatment site. These side effects are usually temporary.

Be sure to call your doctor immediately if you notice any unusual skin reactions around the treatment area.

When will I see results with Artefill and how long will the results last?

You will see results immediately. In the U.S. clinical studies, full wrinkle correction was maintained.

Will I need more than one treatment with Artefill?

Most people get the results they want with one or two treatments, depending on the depth of their wrinkles and folds. When you have your follow-up appointment, you and your doctor can decide if you would like to further enhance your results.

What happens after the microspheres are injected?

Artefill is injected deep in the skin underneath the wrinkle and just above the skin's fat layer. Several scientific journal articles suggest that the collagen in Artefill is absorbed and the microspheres are left suspended in the skin's natural tissue providing a support matrix.

Are the injections painful?

Artefill is formulated with an anesthetic (lidocaine) for patient comfort. For additional comfort, the doctor may numb the treatment area with a topical or local anesthetic agent.

How will my face feel following treatment?

With proper placement, Artefill cannot be felt after treatment. You will see the results immediately and be able to return to your normal daily activities.

Why is a skin test required before treatment with Artefill?

The skin test is a safety precaution to ensure that you are not allergic to the collagen in Artefill.

If I have had a negative collagen skin test previously, do I need to have another skin test with Artefill?

Yes, an Artefill skin test is required prior to treatment to make sure that you are not allergic to the collagen in Artefill.

Can Artefill be used in my lips?

No.
